In Cumbayá, just east of Quito, ORCA Design and ZAFRA Architects have completed CASA SHADDAI, a residence already regarded as one of the most extraordinary homes in the country. The 1,500 m² (16,145 sqft) project is the result of a close collaboration. ORCA Design led the design, and ZAFRA Architects was in charge of construction, executing every detail to the highest standard.
The experience begins at the street. A floating, illuminated staircase rises through terraced gardens and slender cypress trees toward a monumental entrance. The entrance is sheltered by a cantilevered roof with a warm wood soffit. Outside, the house is defined by bold stacked volumes clad in travertine-toned surfaces, textured stone, and dark accents. Above them, a dramatic angular overhang projects toward the garden like the prow of a ship.
Inside, a double-height living room sets the tone with a floating staircase, a cascading crystal chandelier, and marble panels framed by lines of light. Every space was designed for comfort, privacy, and a sense of occasion:
- A glass-enclosed indoor pool with linear ceiling lighting that opens onto the terrace and garden
- A private cinema and a fully equipped gym
- A master suite with a freestanding bathtub framed by views of the Andes, a double vanity, and a walk-in closet
- A covered terrace with an outdoor kitchen, a dining area, and lounge spaces
- Circular skylights set into the terrace floor that bring natural light into the garage below
As night falls, integrated lighting traces the soffits, stairs, and gardens. The house becomes as striking after dark as it is in full sun.
